RCGS athlete to represent Australia at World event

Redland City Gymsports athlete Charlotte Johnstone has been selected to represent Australia at the Trampoline Gymnastics World Age Group Championships to be held in Bulgaria next month.

Charlotte of Ormiston will compete in the Under 22 events for Trampoline, Double Mini and Synchronised Trampoline, November 23-26 in Sofia.

Gymnastics Australia announced the squad on its website saying “it is incredibly exciting for trampolining in this country that we have so many talented junior athletes coming through the ranks, and we cannot wait to see them demonstrate their abilities on the world stage”.

Johnstone only moved up to the Senior women’s division this year and at the Australian Championships May 12-16 at Carrara, placed an unexpected 3rd in women’s trampoline, beating all the national team bar two. She also won silver in Junior U22 double mini and came 6th in level 7 tumbling.

Redland City Gymsports Head Coach, Melanie Tonks said she is a categorised athlete in the Senior National Squad who is receiving the benefit of being able to have some training with the National Coach. As she is only 18, Charlotte has surprised everyone by performing so well at the Qld, NSW and National Championships this year. The other girls are all in their 20’s and have been in the national team for at least four years.

She was one of nine Redlands athletes who recently competed in the National Clubs Championships at the Gold Coast. All made finals in their various events which alone were big achievements. In some events there were over 60 competitors. Finalists were Ella Brushe, Trey Morales, Bella Malcolm, Charlie Ebbstein and Jonah Masri.

Charlie Graham was our best performed athlete with a 2nd placing on Double Mini in Junior Under 13 and a 5th placing in level 5 tumbling. Saxon Walters achieved the most consistent results with a 3rd on Trampoline and 4th on Double Mini in Level 4.

Charlotte Johnstone placed 3rd In Senior International, once again beating all bar one of the Australian Open Team. Jack Van Dam placed 4th in level 5 trampoline, narrowly missing a bronze medal by .1
